CHINA CHARGES EX-FOOTBALL FEDERATION CHIEF WITH BRIBERY AMID FOOTBALL SCANDAL

Former Chinese Football Association president Chen Shiyuan, who was ousted in February this year, has been formally charged with corruption amid an intense crackdown on widespread corruption and misconduct in Chinese football. The Huangshi People’s Procuratorate charged Chen with bribery and other offences following an investigation by the Hubei Provincial Commission for Supervision, state-run China Central Television (CCTV) reported on 26 February. Chen is accused of using his power and position as president of Shanghai International Aviation Group and chairman of the Chinese Football Association to seek benefits for others and illegally accepting property from others, with the amount of the bribes being particularly large, the broadcaster said. Chen was ousted in February after it was revealed that he was being investigated by a discipline inspection team headed by the General Administration of Sport of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Commission for Discipline Inspection-National Commission for Inspection (CCD) and the Hubei Provincial Commission for Supervision for allegedly violating strict discipline rules and breaking the law. Chinese authorities earlier this month indicted former China national team coach Li Tie, whose resignation in November last year triggered a “scandal typhoon” in the football world. The indictments of Li and Chen are expected to speed up the process of bringing other corrupt officials to justice. South Korea’s national football team, Son Jun-ho, the manager and players of Shandong Taishan, have also been investigated for match-fixing and other allegations. Son Jun-ho has been under investigation by the Chaoyang Public Security Bureau in Liaoning province since May 12, when he was detained on suspicion of soliciting non-state actors while returning home from Shanghai Hongqiao Airport, and the bureau switched to a detention investigation on June 17.There has been no further news on his case, and observers have noted that a detention investigation in China can last as little as two months and as long as 스포츠토토 seven months, suggesting that Son’s detention could be prolonged.
